Description

Genre

Cobalt WASD is an action platformer with a focus on online multiplayer. You move with the keyboard and aim with the mouse.

Objective

You play either as a 'Metalface' or a 'Protobot'. Metalfaces try to defend the bomb-sites, while Protobots try to attack and plant the bomb. When the bomb is planted, the Metalfaces must try to defuse the bomb before it explodes.

Guns and Grenades

Each round, both teams get a chance to spend their earnings on new gear. The types of gear include armors, guns, grenades, melee weapons, equipment and vehicles. Each team has access to both common and unique equipment which keeps the gameplay asymmetric and varied.

Lobbies and Servers

The game is primarily played online versus other players, though you can play with bots both offline and online. You can host private lobbies just for your friends or you can host your own dedicated server if you so please.

Custom Maps and Mods

To create mods or custom maps, you will need access to the original Cobalt, which offers mapping and modding tools for both Cobalt and Cobalt WASD. However, you can still play custom maps and subscribe to mods through the Steam Workshop even if you only own Cobalt WASD.

Fairness

We believe in keeping the game immersive and fair, which is why there are NO micro-transations, NO features locked behind 'collectors editions', or 'exclusive deals' and no pay-to-win elements of any kind. When you buy Cobalt WASD, you get the same game that everyone else got.

PS

If you have read this far, I'd like to also point out that aside from being true to all these paragraphs of text, Cobalt WASD is also a lot of fun!

History

Cobalt Spin-off

Cobalt WASD is a separate stand-alone spin-off in the Cobalt universe. After the release of Cobalt we worked on improving the core game but also looking at what else could be done with what we’ve got. As Cobalt did not meet our expectations, we decided to analyze what could have been done differently. What followed can be summarized as three areas of improvement.

Focus

Firstly, we decided that we wanted to make a game that was the opposite of Cobalt. Instead of making many different game modes, many different kinds of content, and publish on many different platforms, we wanted to focus one one singular game mode, one kind of content and one platform - and try to do that well.

Conventions

Secondly, we came to the conclusion that innovations should probably be kept to one area (or at least as few areas as possible) per game. So instead of creating new controls, new game modes, new equipment, new stories and new default projectile physics, we tried to find the best convention we could find in each area except one, and apply it. The area we decided innovate in, which is also an area where cobalt has a lot of existing content, is equipment!

Dedicated Servers

Thirdly, based on our experience with Cobalt we knew online lobbies on their own weren't going to cut it. Online games with a lean towards competitive gameplay must feel fair and adding dedicated server support was a key factor in achieving that. It also made sure that game modes which required a persistent state could be considered.

Closed Beta

Towards the end of the development we opened the game up to closed beta testing, where both old and new faces helped us with bug-fixing and recording trailer content. Without the brave souls in the Cobalt Discord channel Cobalt WASD would never have been done! Thank you all!

Riding a Predator into battle. Each team has two vehicles each to choose from.

Aura abilities are shared with nearby team-mates and friendly turrets when activated. This is the 'Shield Aura'.

The 'Cloaking Aura' ability of the 'Stealth' armor. Notice that it also turns allies invisible.

The 'Time Jumper' let's you teleport to where you shoot and slows down nearby enemies in the process.

'Matter War' in action. A powerful single-shot sniper rifle. It also has a scope for long range sniping.

The 'Scouter' armor of the Metalfaces has the 'Shield Aura' ability which greatly improves your chances of survival.

The Protobots has the 'Bullet Deflector' ability causing bullets to deflect back onto the shooter.

The 'Timeline Aura' ability gives you a chance to peek a dangerous corner without the risk of dying.

Doding bullets is a lot easier with the 'Time Bubble' ability. This is also the ability which most resembles the bullet-logic of the original Cobalt, now instead in the form of an active ability granted by the 'Chrono' armor of the Metalfaces.

While each round offers no respawning when dying, healing grenades can revive dead teammates, as well as anyone in the vicinity if they for some reason were to explode.
